Boston History, Culture and So Much More

The largest city in New England, approximately 4.4 million people call Boston and the surrounding communities home.  While it is not as large as other metropolitan areas in the United States, it is a city that is rich in history and holds the keys to many of the events that have shaped the United States.

One of the things that sets Boston apart from many other cities in the United States is the saturation of colleges and universities in the area.  Not only does Boston have a wide selection of higher education options, but it also boasts the finest institutions in the nation.  Some of the more prestigious colleges and universities include

  1. Boston College
  2. Emerson College
  3. Harvard
  4. MIT
  5. Tufts University
  6. UMass

The city has four distinct seasons with July’s average temperatures around 74 degrees and January’s at 29 degrees.  Geographically speaking, Boston proper is quite compact with regard to land mass.  The Charles river separates it from several suburbs, referred to as the “Greater Boston” region.  These communities include Winthrop, Revere, Chelsea, Everett, Somerville, Cambridge, Watertown, Newton, Brookline, Needham, Dedham, Canton, Milton, and Quincy.  To the east of Boston is the Boston Harbor, known for the infamous Boston Tea Party in which the American colonists protested taxes imposed by the British by dumping tea into the harbor.  Boston proper has several historic districts including Beacon Hill, Back Bay, South End and Boston Common.  Each of these areas has a significant part in the history and development of the city and some even display the orginal cobblestone streets.

Boston has a thriving cutural center including a wide variety of museums, libraries, theaters and concert halls.  It also plays host to several professional sports teams.  The famed Red Sox play at Major Leauge Baseball at Fenway park, while football fans cheer for the New England Patriots.  Other sports teams include the Boston Celtics (NBA) the Bruins (NHL) The Revolution (MLS) and the Cannons (indoor LaCrosse)

In addition to world renowned colleges, Boston has the oldest public school system in the United States.  57,000 students from grades kindergarten through 12 are enrolled.  There are also a variety of private and parochial schools as well as several charter schools.  The area has an excellent reputation for providing a quality education with an 82 percent graduation rate and high honors from Forbes Magazine, which ranked the Boston public schools as the best large school system in the country (2002).

While Boston does not have the most expensive housing in the nation, it is much more costly than similarly sized metro areas.  The median price for a home in the Greater Boston area is $485,000, however, there is a large separation between the least and most expensive housing options ($60,000 vs. $13 million).

Some realtors in the Boston area choose to advertise their services through local chambers of commerce.  Others utilize traditional methods such as the Boston Globe or Boston Herald.  There are many online marketing opportunities as well. The site www.boston-online.com offers links to many realtor sites as well as helpful tips for relocating to the city.  In addition, The Massachusetts Association of Buyer Agents (MABA) provides consumers with a list of reputable agents through their website www.massbuyeragents.com.

Ripped from the pages of a history book, the Greater Boston area offers residents rich cultural and entertainment opportunities. While it is a wonderful place to explore and visit, many would argue that it is an even better place to call home.
